Inverter Topologies
Understanding the various inverters and it’s building blocks.
Inverter
The standard inverter uses a DC storage medium (typically a battery) and inverts the low-voltage DC power to AC power. An external method of charging is required.
Bi-Directional Inverter-Charger

A Bi-Directional Inverter-Charger can take excess power on the load side (usually provided by an external, grid-tie inverter, and feed it back into the inverter to charge the battery. The advantage is that the MPPT charging from the solar is done at very high voltages, which improves overall efficiency.
Systems like these can also be configured to feed back into the grid. In case of grid feed applications, S1 will automatically open when the grid falls away to prevent grid-feed and accidental shock.
Hybrid Inverter-Charger

There are different definitions of a Hybrid Inverter, but Sunray views it as any Inverter-Charger that has a built-in Solar charger. This can either be a MPPT or PWM charger, and is usually accompanied by smart power management that intelligently switches between solar and grid for battery charging. These are very popular in off-grid applications.
On-Grid Inverters
This wide grouping of inverters refers to any unit that can synchronize its inverted power (either from a battery inverter or solar inverter) to the incoming utility power. This is a requirement for grid feedback, net-metering, self consumption and mini-grids.
Hybrid Grid-Tie Inverter-Charger

This is the same as a standard Hybrid Inverter Charger, with the addition that the output of the inverter is synchronized with the grid, and feed back into the grid. This is a very cost effective mini grid solution.
Bi-Directional Hybrid Inverter-Charger

As with the Hybrid Grid-Tie Inverter-Charger, this unit feeds back into the grid, but the method of grid-tie is through a high voltage Grid-Tie solar charger, which has a higher efficiency and is more sophisticated than the battery-grid-tie-inverter. This system has it all: Backup, self consumption, Grid feed-in, smart battery management, smart load management, smart metering, comprehensive monitoring and a plethora of settings and options.
Grid-Tie Inverter

A Grid tie inverter uses a high PV voltage and inverts directly to AC power, which has an extremely high conversion efficiency. This AC power is synchronized with the input power from the grid and is used for self-consumption. Systems like this was developed for countries with a very reliable grid where net-metering or grid feed-in is allowed. In such a case, the grid would act as the storage medium. Grid-tie inverters can also be used in combination with other battery based systems in mini-grid applications.
